Diodes

What is Diode? A Definition:

A diode is a semiconductor device that acts like a conductor to allow the current to pass in one direction (while forward biasing) and it acts as an insulator since it blocks the current passing in opposite direction (known as reverse biasing).
-Diode is a combination of N-type materials and P-type materials, as shown

Working of Diode:

Diode as a conductor:

when a voltage potential is applied to the terminals of the diode as the positive potential is connected with the positive terminal of the diode and negative potential is connected with the negative terminal of diode.it is called forward biasing.this causes the holes to move towards the depletion layer and the free electrons also move towards the depletion layer.so the depletion layer shrinks and current flow through the diode.

Diode as an insulator:

when the polarity of the battery is reversed.the holes moves away from the depletion layer and the electrons also moves away from the depletion layer.so expanding the depletion layer region thus restricting the flow of current.as shown.

Applications:

Diodes are also known as rectifiers.which convert AC into pulsating DC.

Thank You.
